Age Appropriate Handwriting Grasp

Handwriting is an important aspect of daily life. Whether it is at school, at work, or at home each of us uses handwriting to express ourselves and our thoughts each and every day. Did you know handwriting development can begin as early as 1 year old?

1 – 1 ½ years Fisted grasp (movement from whole arm)

2 – 3 years Palmar grasp (more control of shoulder and arm holds crayon/pencil with fingers)

3 – 4 years Quadrupod grasp or Static tripod grasp (wrist gives crayon/pencil movement and fingers don’t have independent movement)

4 – 6 years Dynamic tripod (fingers and wrist move independently allowing precise writing)

If you think your child is in need of occupational, physical, or speech therapy call us today to set up a FREE screening at 586-323-2957!
