Unlocking Communication with TouchChat: An In-Depth Guide to AAC Solutions

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) programs provide essential support for individuals with significant and complex communication challenges, enabling them to express themselves more effectively. TouchChat is an iPad and iPhone app that helps individuals communicate.

Continue reading to find out about the many features that make TouchChat a good choice for individuals with communication disorders.

What is TouchChat?

TouchChat is an AAC application that empowers individuals who cannot use, or have difficulty using, their natural voice to communicate effectively. This program presents an effective communication solution that is easily customizable to an individual’s specific needs.

Key Features of TouchChat

TouchChat’s standout feature is speech output, which serves as a language model by vocalizing the selected message. This feature can encourage verbal speech and provides a natural flow of communication.

TouchChat uses a Core Vocabulary framework, prioritizing frequently used words and allowing users to create complex messages by combining words and phrases. This approach supports language development and helps individuals construct meaningful sentences.

Core vocabulary is complemented by fringe vocabulary, which includes less commonly used words related to specific topics or interests (e.g., names of family members, favorite foods, or hobbies). Together, these two vocabulary components allow for general language building with personalized communication.

How Does TouchChat Work?

TouchChat uses a dynamic page layout where each button press can transition to a new page with related vocabulary options. This design mirrors the flow of natural conversation and helps users navigate topics intuitively. Each button is color-coded to indicate part of speech, and users can customize buttons with text, pre-programmed symbols, or custom images.

The wide range of accessibility features ensures inclusivity by providing options for those with limited motor abilities or visual impairments. Buttons can also be programmed to perform specific functions, such as speaking a message, linking to a new page, or clearing previous selections. This flexibility makes TouchChat adaptable to a wide range of communication needs.

Who Benefits from Using TouchChat?

TouchChat offers training modules, user guides, and tutorials to help users, families, and other professionals get started with the app. You can find access to this information here.

Finding the Right AAC Solution

AAC methods, including specific applications like TouchChat, should be highly individualized. An evaluation by a speech-language pathologist is essential to determine the best mode of communication for each person’s unique needs and abilities. While TouchChat may be a good match for one individual, it may not be the ideal solution for another. Careful consideration of personal preferences, cognitive abilities, and functional communication goals will guide the selection process.
