TouchChat App

October is augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) month. An AAC provides solutions for those with  significant and complex communication disorder to express themselves.

There are many different types of applications that can be used to help those with difficulties speaking to communicate. One of these apps is called TouchChat, it can be downloaded and used on an iPad to help the user express their wants and needs.

Read more about TouchChat and how we use it at CWJR in our blog post.

What is TouchChat?

TouchChat allows individuals who cannot use or have difficulty using their natural voice a chance to communicate. TouchChat provides speech output when selecting a button.

What is the speech output feature?

The speech output feature encourages verbal speech by providing the individual with a language model for the message they’re communicating. The software is designed to include both English and Spanish options, with a variety of different voices for the individual to choose from. This application is Core Vocab based, allowing the individual opportunity to build upon their messages through building of sentences (see previous blog post regarding core vocabulary vs fringe vocabulary)

How does TouchChat work?

Pages are dynamic (moving from one to another) upon selection, utilizing most commonly used words that relate to the initial selection. The design within TouchChat is color coded, allowing categorization by parts of speech. Each button can include text, a pre-programmed symbol, and/or a custom symbol for a word. Each button can also be programmed to serve a specific function, such as saying a message, taking the individual to another page of words/messages, or clearing previous selections.

Who can use TouchChat?

This app has been found to be a good match for individuals from a variety of populations, such as ALS, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Apraxia, Stroke, and/or other conditions impacting their vocal speech.

Remember, as with all treatment plans for speech and language, selection of an AAC method, as well as the specific app, is a choice that is highly individualized per situation. While TouchChat may be a good match for one individual with a particular diagnosis or skill, it may not be for another. The evaluating therapist should always consider a variety of elements specific to the patient when determining what mode of communication will be best for their success.
