Self-care is any activity that we purposefully do in order to take care of our emotional, physical, or mental well-being. While a simple concept, it is often difficult for people to put this into practice.
It may be hard for you to implement self care into your daily routine. As parents and caregivers we often put others before ourselves and constantly give, give, give to those we care for. While we have to address the needs of our loved ones daily, we cannot forget to show ourselves love and give ourselves a break every once in a while – this can help to prevent burnout so that we’re able to give 100% and be the best possible versions of ourselves.
Physical Self-Care
- Take an exercise class
- Go for a walk
- Try yoga
- Sleep/take a nap
- Tense muscles then release
Mental Self-Care
- Read a book
- Meditate
- Sit in a quiet place for 5 minutes
- Practice deep breathing
- Take a bubble bath
Emotional Self-Care
- Call a friend/loved one
- Start a feelings and/or gratitude journal
- Practice deep breathing
- Try yoga
Like almost everything else, self-care does not look the same for everyone. Some people find bubble baths relaxing, while others hate the idea of sitting in hot water with bubbles for an hour. The list above is not comprehensive, and as you can see, oftentimes some forms of self-care can overlap and address multiple areas at once. Here are some links that you can use to put some of the above ideas into practice!
Getting Started
Below are just two of the many ways you can get started with self-care and relaxation techniques. As with all exercise programs, when using our exercise videos, you must use caution. To reduce and avoid injury, you will want to check with your doctor before beginning any fitness program.
